While there are as many reasons for dieting as there are dieters, it takes a certain amount of dedication, fortitude and will power to maintain a diet program. If you were ever on a diet, how did you feel? Were you successful in achieving your desired goal; or are you still struggling with it? Were you aware that during the 17th and 18th centuries, physicians and patients regulated their food carefully, in order to prevent disease? Did you also know that in 1863, a gentleman by the name of William Banting was one of the first people known to have successfully lost weight by developing a diet by targeting carbohydrates? Sound familiar?

You can successfully diet using the following techniques: Always be seated at a table when eating. Avoid having dinner in your living room while watching television. Eat only when you are hungry; three healthy meals a day is the norm. Eat slowly; put down your fork between each bite. Chew your food slowly and methodically; try not to quickly chew and swallow. Never go shopping on an empty stomach; not only will you buy everything in sight, but spend a fortune to boot. If you have a nine-to-five job; bring your lunch and eat outdoors, never in your cubicle. Exercise whenever possible. If you can walk 20 minutes on your lunch hour; do it. Take a trip to your local park, and walk around the track once or twice. If you have an errand to run, and you can walk instead of drive; do it. If you enjoy music, turn on the stereo in your home and move. On weekends, take your kids bike riding; or spend a day at the park playing touch football.

Whether dieting is a choice or a necessity, the key is not to allow it to take over your life. Just do the best you can, as often as you can. Focusing too much on one thing becomes an obsession; which leads to stress if not perfectly achieved; and eventually puts you in a state of angst. Nothing is worth your mental or emotional health, particularly when it comes to dieting. Perhaps it is a matter of choice.

Mysore has gained a lot of fame recently for its yoga traditions and the world famous teachers. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the maestro of yoga, who initially introduced the Ashtanga in Mysore in the 1930′s, is considered to be the Guruji of yoga. Due to this reason, often times, Mysore is referred to as the Ashtanga city. Guruji, who passed away this year in May, has left a legacy behind, which teaches its students to achieve high levels of meditation based on the breathing techniques that allow maximum utilization of the lungs. These breathing techniques called Vinyasa are linked to a series of postures to accomplish serenity, flexibility and stamina.

Yoga lovers know and consider Mysore as the primary place to gain training that will let them follow in the footsteps of Guruji Jois. A vast majority of yogis travel to India to seek the conventional yogic preaching that Guruji taught at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in the town of Lakshmipuram, Mysore. This Institute is commonly referred as the yoga shala and was opened by Guruji in 1948. The institute offers a variety of classes for all, starting from the beginner’s level and moving to the advanced level. Classes at the shala commence early in the morning, as yoga is not just about exercise, it is about improving the way and quality of life.

A normal class consists of 25 – 30 students with an instructor available to help them through various routines. One of the key points of Ashtanga is that it is not instruction intensive. It encourages its students to meditate and accomplish different poses at their own pace. At times, a newcomer feels that an Ashtanga class is full of chaos as all the students are doing their own thing. However, on close scrutiny, it becomes obvious, that the class is actually more like a choreographed dance, where people follow a set pattern and breathing technique.

Guruji Jois has established an organization which is superior in all aspects of teaching. Each student learns the cycle of poses at his or her own personal pace. For new student, or for people facing problem with their routines, special assistance is available at the institute. Yoga lovers pay a monthly fee of $350 and a registration fee of $250. To obtain maximum benefit from the training, a three month stay is advised by the institute. After enrolling at the shala, students are required to discontinue all other forms of yoga training from teachers outside of the Institute during their stay in Mysore.

Mysore is a fantastic and intriguing city full of splendor. Its landscape is peppered with temples and palaces. Guruji Jois himself had the pleasure of working with the Maharaja of Mysore in the 1930′s. Mysore has become the yoga tourist capital of the world. Americans and Europeans find this destination to be a place where they can gain a potent mixture of culture and spirituality.

What is a healthy diet for a dog? Many of us don’t have a clue. If you walk into a store to buy dog food, you will find hundreds of choices. So, how do we pick the best one and what makes one brand better than another. The simple answer is “read the label”. The label will hold the most information available to determine what your dog is eating. The average person probably wouldn’t think to read the label ingredients, but if you have done research into this and want the healthiest food for your dog, this is your starting point. By reading the label you will learn a lot about foods.

First of all, you want to see some type of meal listed in the ingredients. It doesn’t matter if it’s chicken meal or lamb meal, although chicken is considered the best choice since it is most easily digested. Make sure it doesn’t just say meat meal, but an actual meat name. Whole meat without meal is mainly water. Also make sure the ingredients include a variety of vegetables and fruits.

Also look for Association of American Feeding Control Officials and feeding trials. This will mean the food was actually fed to dogs to see if they meet nutritional needs. It will mean the food is complete and balanced for adult dogs. Also, be aware that a manufacturer has up to six months to notify the consumer that it has made a change in its ingredients.

If you obtained your dog from a breeder, then this is your best source of information regarding the best, healthiest food to feed your dog. If this is not the case, then you are pretty much on your own in finding the best food and your dog will be the food critic. When you feel you have found an appropriate dog food for your pet’s diet, buy small bags at first.

Highest priced foods do not always mean they are the best. Remember, the best foods contain real whole familiar ingredients. It is always wise to avoid foods that contain many by products and preservatives. And, a dog food company is not required to list preservatives they did not add. In the end, studying labels, and trial and error, will be the best indicators of what is healthy and nutritious for you pet.
